18 June 2010 - Future events open to multi-stakeholders

A series of training events (with typically 40-50 participants) will be open to Turkish beneficiaries working (or studying) in either TÜBİTAK, TAEK or other governmental bodies, industrial laboratories and universities. Download the list of events here (icon 236KB ). Certain rules for event registration will apply:

  • Phase 1 - Registration for TÜBİTAK and TAEK: 15% of the possible places each.
  • Phase 2 - Registration: 70% open to all other (Turkish) stakeholders/end-users, with the registration being handled by the JRC Event Registration System.
  • Phase 3 - Confirmation: an applicant's place is confirmed by the event organiser.

Please consult the EMIT website regularly for registration details of the event you are interested in. Registration will typically be possible 6 weeks before each event.

Project news - 26 November 2009

First training workshop under the EU-Turkey metrology project
The Fifth VERMI Young Researchers Workshop on the Standardisation of Radionuclides took place in Ankara, Turkey, 1-6 November. The workshop was the first in a series of many training events to be carried out during the three-year project. The workshop was jointly organised by JRC-IRMM, the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK) and the Virtual European Radionuclide Metrology Institute (VERMI). Previous VERMI workshops have been organised in Paris, Geel and Varna (twice).

The workshop brought together 52 Turkish and European scientists, from NMI's and universities, for five days of intensive lectures and exercises in the field of radionuclide metrology. Whereas the majority of participants were drawn from the Sarayköy and Çekmece Nuclear Research and Training Centers (SANAEM and ÇNAEM) of TAEK, the lectures were given by 7 experts from IRMM, PTB (Germany), LNE-LNHB (France) and IRMC (UK). The workshop included a visit to the TAEK-SANAEM laboratories outside Ankara.

Project news - 27 October 2009

Formal project kick-off meeting, Ankara
The kick-off event of the IPA project "Improving Chemical and Ionising Radiation Metrology" took place in Ankara on the 27th of October 2009, in the presence of approximately 100 participants from both the project partners and from project stakeholders like universities, accredited laboratories and private companies. Prof. O. Anlagan, vice president of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, emphasised the horizontal importance of the project for quality of life related areas as environment, health, consumer protection and food safety. Mr. T. Varadi, Deputy Head of the EC delegation to Turkey, pointed out that the EU, by far, is Turkey's largest trade partner and Turkey is the 7th largest for the EU. In addition, the EU is the biggest foreign direct investor in Turkey. Under this aspect, the improvement of Metrology will contribute to the free movement of goods within the EU-Turkey customs Union agreement and, hence, this project will facilitate trade between the EU and Turkey. During the kick-off event the Directors of the project partners signed the letter of intent, thereby strongly committing themselves to the implementation of the common project within their organisations.

Project concept

The science of measurement – also known as metrology – is probably the oldest science in the world, and underpins almost every aspect of our daily lives. From buying food in the supermarket to undergoing blood tests in the hospital, it is almost impossible to go through the day without referring to weights and measurements. Metrology underpins the free movement of goods and the smooth functioning of the international agreements such as the EU-Turkey Customs Agreement. Moreover, a well-functioning measurement infrastructure is necessary for the adoption of the body of European laws known as the acquis communautaire and thus contributing to the accession of Turkey to the EU.

Project objectives

The three-year project - funded by the European Union under the instrument for pre-accession assistance ( IPA) - will enhance the measurement capacity for chemical and ionising radiation metrology in Turkey. An enhanced measurement infrastructure in Turkey will afford its citizens an increased quality of life in areas such as environment, health, food safety and consumer protection.
