Metrology support programme

In support of enlargement IRMM launched in 2001 its programme on metrology in chemistry for Candidate Countries.

One of the initiatives of the support programme is TrainMiC which has developed into a full training programme for metrology in chemistry. During 2001-2004 approximately 1400 scientists from the new Member States, Candidate Countries and Western Balkans have been trained. TrainMic is presently open for participants from all Member States and the Candidate and Western Balkan Countries.

IRMM supports the Candidate and Western Balkan Countries by giving the countries free access to the IMEP comparisons. Through participation in IMEP, laboratories from the Candidate Countries can demonstrate the degree of equivalence of their measurement capability, and compare that to the present level in the EU.

IRMM has also helped representatives of the new Member States and Candidate Countries to map the status of metrology in chemistry in their countries. Eight status reports have been published, outlining the measures necessary to enable implementing the EU legal framework in the future.

A similar project is now being carried out in Albania where technical expertise in the field of metrology needs to meet new requirements. The establishment of a free trade area in the Balkans as well as a future free trade agreement (FTA) with EU requires a functioning metrology system which will also fulfil the requirements set on quality of environment and safety and quality of food. Within this project IRMM provides expert advice in capacity building and training with the aim of building the capabilities of selected laboratories, and helps upgrading the Albanian legal framework.
