Life in Geel

JRC-IRMM is located in Geel, which is a vibrant town of 34,000 inhabitants located in the tranquil surroundings of the Flanders countryside. In the town centre, the lively markt is surrounded by traditional Flemish brasseries serving hearty fare. The cities of Antwerp and Brussels are easily reachable by train.

The area offers opportunities for pleasant walks, and cycling is also popular. Many roads have separate lanes for bikes and there are kilometres of bicycle paths along canals, from town to town, or from cafés to restaurants. The numerous lakes (a total area of 700 ha) in nearby Mol are excellent for water sport activities.

A wide range of clubs are organised within JRC-IRMM - always in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. These include athletics, bowling, football, golf, horse riding, ski, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The nearby research centre, SCK/CEN, offers additional facilities including sailing, fishing, table tennis, diving, and clay pigeon shooting.


Work-life balance

For working parents, the JRC-IRMM is located beside the European School in Mol.

JRC-IRMM also has its own crèche for children of staff members. The crèche welcomes children between 0-3 years old and is located at the premises of the European School. Settling in

JRC-IRMM has several furnished and fully-equipped studios and apartments , either in the vicinity of the institute, or in the centre of Mol. They are equipped with TV and telephone, and laundry facilities are available.
