Nuclear physics unveils secrets of Bronze Age sword

| Physicists at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) have helped unveil the secrets of a Bronze Age sword with neutron beams normally used to study materials for nuclear reactors. The work was carried out by a team of European researchers investigating the application of modern scientific methods to cultural heritage objects. |

External access to IRMM accelerators: 10 new experiments approved

The specialised accelerator facilities at JRC-IRMM for neutron data
measurements can be accessed by international researchers through the EUFRAT
project. The project's Programme Advisory Committee met on 13 November 2009
and approved ten new
experiments allocating 1100 beam hours at GELINA and 424 hours at the Van
de Graaff accelerator.

The Fifth VERMI Young Researchers Workshop on the Standardisation of
Radionuclides took place in Ankara, Turkey 1-6 November. This workshop was the
first in a series of many training events to be carried out during the
three-year project.

New reference material application note available online

JRC-IRMM has released Application Note 6 on the correct use of ERM
certificates and materials. The note describes some practical aspects
associated with handling and use of certified reference materials (CRMs) in
laboratories, and is now also available in all EU languages, as well as in
Chinese and Japanese. The various values provided on a certificate, re-use of
materials, applying a moisture correction and interpretation of the
traceability statement are also explained.
